The AMS Department will be hosting the Mathematics Olympiad in SUNY Korea this week. The Math Olympiad will take place in Academic Building C 103 on Saturday, May 11th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Speaker: Ja-Yong Koo, Korea University Place: B103 Time: Thu, 05/02/2019 - 17:30 Abstract Regression analysis is one of the most commonly used methods in statistics that explores functional relationships between variables of interest. Specifically, it examines the influence of one or more predictors on a response variable. We will review the basics of linear regression analysis in which the relationships between a response variable and predictors are assumed to be linear. The focus will be on a careful and intuitive understanding of fundamental concepts of regression analysis. We will also discuss the case where the relationships between variables are highly nonlinear. Flexible regression models based on splines will be briefly introduced.

Speaker: Donghwan Kim, KAIST Place: B203 Time: Fri, 04/05/2019 - 16:00 Abstract Many modern applications, such as machine learning and statistics, require solving large-dimensional optimization problems. First-order methods, such as a gradient method and a proximal point method, are widely used to solve such large-scale problems, since their computational cost per iteration mildly depends on the problem dimension. However, they suffer from slow convergence rates, compared to second-order methods such as Newton's method. Therefore, accelerating first-order methods has received a great interest, and this led to the development of a conjugate gradient method, a heavy-ball method, and Nesterov's fast gradient method, which we will review in this talk. This talk will then present recently proposed accelerated first-order methods, named optimized gradient method (OGM) and OGM-G.

Ky Q. Tran joined SUNY Korea in Spring 2019 as a professor in the Department Applied Mathematics & Statistics. Currently, Professor Tran is teaching two math courses in SUNY Korea: MAP 103 (Proficiency Algebra) and AMS 311 (Probability Theory).

Qing Zhang accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor offer from Department of Mathematics, Shantou University in China. She will start on February 25th. Qing was a Ph.D. student who was with us in SUNY Korea as an ICTCCP student for two years from spring 2016 to fall 2017. She also contributed to the AMS undergraduate education by serving as a TA for AMS 161, 261 and 301.

Prof. Suil O organized 3rd KECRWIC (Korean Early Career Researcher Workshop in Combinatorics), which took place in Iksan from July 22nd to August 3rd, 2018. The workshop was founded by Prof. Suil O with two other people together, and the first KECRWIC was held at SUNY-Korea in June 2017. KECRWIC is intended for early career mathematicians in the field of combinatorics.

Prof. Suil O has been selected as a recipient of a NRF-NSFC Joint Grant (National Research Foundation of Korea and National Natural Science Foundation of China), funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. His project is on “Saturated Graphs and their Eigenvalues”, and the total budget is 30 Million Won for 2 years.

Professor Suil O has been selected as a recipient of a National Research Foundation research grant funded by the Ministry of Education. His project is on “Spectral bounds for the connectivity in regular graphs,” and the total budget is over 140 Million Won for 3 years. Professor O is looking for talented graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in spectral graph theory. On May 27th, AMS undergraduate students met Professor Joseph Mitchell, Chair of AMS at Stony Brook University! It took almost two hours for Q&A session. Students asked questions regarding student life in SBU, future careers after graduating AMS, and attitudes they need to have. Professor Mitchell gave a lot of useful advices and encouragements. It was a very inspiring moment! Also, it was a great opportunity to have a conversation with Professor Mitchell! Thank you, Professor Mitchell!
