[Student Reporter] Alumni Career Talk Sparks Inspiration at SUNY Korea On April 12, 2025, SUNY Korea hosted the Spring Alumni Career Talk and welcomed back its alumni to share their professional journeys and insights with the current students. The event featured graduates from various majors – including Computer Science and Technology and Society from Stony Brook University, Korea, and Fashion Business Management from Fashion Institute of Technology, Korea. The session provided a platform for alumni to reflect on their academic experiences, career paths, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. Among the presenters was Hawon Park, Computer Science graduate, a researcher who spoke about his days at SUNY Korea, his internships with V-ethos and Zero Class, and how those opportunities helped shape his career. Jinsil Lee, Fashion Business Management graduate, shared her story as the CEO of Weekendglow. After leaving a Korean university at a young age to gain work experience, she spent years in the retail industry as an employee and store manager. At the age of 26, she decided to pursue higher education in the U.S., ultimately enrolling in the FIT program at SUNY Korea. She highlighted that learning has no age limit, and credited her time at FIT for helping her find business partners. During each session, all the alumni mentioned a common theme: make the most of your university life. They advised students to explore their interests, seek out internships, and utilize resources like the Career Development Center. They stressed that what students learn in college often plays a vital role in shaping their professional and personal identities, particularly when preparing resumes, interviews, and future career decisions. The Spring 2025 Alumni Career Talk served as a bridge to connect SUNY Korea alumni and current students. SUNY Korea CPA Study Group Visits Deloitte Korea Headquarters On April 11, 2025, the Business Management Department’s CPA Study Group, accompanied by accounting professors, participated in a special field trip to Deloitte Korea’s headquarters, located in the IFC building in Yeouido, Seoul. The visit began with a warm welcome from Deloitte Korea’s CEO, Mr. Jong-sung Hong, who took the time to personally greet the delegation. His presence made a significant impression on the students, emphasizing Deloitte's commitment to talent development and engagement with the next generation of professionals. During the visit, participants were given an in-depth overview of Deloitte’s corporate vision, the qualities the firm seeks in future talent, and insights into its diverse business areas, including future-focused initiatives and innovative service lines. Students also had the unique opportunity to tour the office space, gaining a firsthand look at the professional environment of one of the Big Four accounting firms. This experience gave CPA students a clearer understanding of real-world expectations in the accounting industry and helped them visualize potential career paths. It also reinforced the importance of leadership, adaptability, and continuous learning in the evolving landscape of finance in the global world.

Dr. Andrea Goldsmith Appointed as Seventh President of Stony Brook University Stony Brook University has announced the appointment of its seventh president, Dr. Andrea Goldsmith. Currently serving as the Dean of Engineering and Applied Science and the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton University, Dr. Goldsmith’s appointment was officially confirmed by The State University of New York (SUNY) on February 19, 2025 and her role will be effective from August 1, 2025. “We look forward to working with her to propel our university to the next level,” said President Arthur H. Lee in his congratulatory speech during the Spring 2025 Convocation held on February 20, 2025. SUNY Korea Hosts Spring 2025 Convocation for 167 New Students SUNY Korea successfully held the Spring 2025 Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, February 20, 2025. Prior to the ceremony, from February 14th to the 19th, the New Student Welcome Week (NSWW) took place, offering the students a variety of activities to learn more about the school and build connections with their peers. This spring sees the introduction of 167 new students representing seven countries – South Korea, the United States, India, Japan, China, Canada, and France. SUNY Korea has now welcomed students from 70 different nations since its inaugural class in Fall 2014, a testament to the global spirit of this institution. The ceremony featured a welcome address by President Arthur Lee, followed by a congratulatory speech from Carl Lejuez, Provost and Executive Vice President of SBU. Key events included the student oath, scholarship awards, and the SUNY Korea pin ceremony. In his welcome address, President Lee stated, “As you set out to achieve your dreams, do not be afraid of failure - failure is part of the journey. When setbacks come, learn from them, adapt, and keep moving forward. Welcome to the start of an extraordinary adventure. Dream big, work hard, and make this journey unforgettable.” During the ceremony, 64 students were awarded with scholarships, recognizing their outstanding achievements and potential. SUNY Korea remains committed to providing extensive scholarship opportunities to ensure that talented students can pursue their education and research without any financial barriers. Following the Convocation Ceremony, the newly enrolled students, from Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS), Business Management (BM), Computer Science (CS), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Technology and Society (TS), will start their first day of the Spring 2025 semester on Friday, February 21.

SUNY Korea Class of 2024 Commencement and FIT's AAS Exhibition SUNY Korea held its Spring 2024 Commencement Ceremony and the AAS Exhibition for FIT’s graduating class of 2024 Fashion Design students on June 14th. Spring 2024 Commencement A total of 158 people graduated, including 81 from five departments from Stony Brook University – Computer Science, Technology & Society, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Business Management – and 77 from the Fashion Design and Fashion Business Management Departments of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). During the commencement ceremony, Arthur H. Lee, President of SUNY Korea, sincerely congratulated the graduates. He emphasized the SUNY Korea spirit to the graduates, urging them to put into action the knowledge acquired during their university years, execute their plans, and share these efforts with those around them to contribute to making a better world. Deborah Klesenski, FIT’s Associate Vice President for Faculty and Student Academic Support Programs, gave a congratulatory speech. She praised the students for their hard work and advised the graduates to be artists who always question their own perspectives, emphasizing that what makes an individual's life special is their story. She encouraged them to never abandon three essential elements – art, passion, and friends – in order to better endure the various chapters of life. Klesenski reminded the graduates that their efforts and perseverance can lead to significant achievements in the future. Carl Lejuez, Chairman of SUNY Korea LLC, also attended the graduation ceremony. He stated, "There is no predetermined correct path in life; I hope you walk a journey that is meaningful to you." He expressed gratitude for the students' dedication, which has enabled SUNY Korea to become a more advanced educational institution. AAS Exhibition The AAS Exhibition, organized by the graduates of FIT's Fashion Design Department, featured the theme of "Thierry Mugler." All garments on display were designed and produced by the graduating class of 2024 in remembrance of Thierry Mugler's design legacy. Mark-Evan Blackman, Fashion Design Chair, praised all the students for their hard work these past two years, and said, “This event allows you to appreciate a variety of skills, including illustration and color analysis, as well as the high-quality draping, flat patterns, and advanced sewing techniques that FIT is renowned for.” The exhibition will be open free of charge from June 14 to September 7. SUNY Korea Students Shine in Prestigious Competitions [SBU] L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 Competition [FIT] The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest Stony Brook University (SBU) and Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) students of SUNY Korea have once again proven their talents and capabilities on the international stage, securing top honors in two prestigious competitions. SBU Takes First Place in L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 Competition Incheon Global Campus students have secured first place in the highly competitive L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 local competition. The winning team was Sunghyun Shin, majoring in Technology & Society at Stony Brook University, Nayoung Kim, majoring Molecular Life Sciences at Ghent University Global Campus, and Bae Hasung, also studying Molecular Life Sciences at Ghent University Global Campus. Sunghyun Shin, expressing her gratitude, remarked “It was a great experience collaborating with fellow colleagues from the Incheon Global Campus students. Moreoever, being able to achieve 1st place among the top-tier Korean universities was challenging yet fulfilling.” These students will now compete in the Loreal Brandstorm International Competition that will be held in the United Kingdom this June. FIT Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievement in The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest Meanwhile, Fashion Institute of Technology students received the ‘Idea Award’ in The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest. Under the guidance of Professor Hyeyeon Jeong, the FIT team showcased their expertise in the field of distribution and marketing for Lotte Home Shopping. The winning FIT’s FBM department team members include Minseo Cho, Yujin Lee, and Chaeun Moon, whose dedication and creativity stood out among competitors. Their innovative ideas and strategic insights underscore FIT's commitment to nurturing future leaders in the fashion and business industries. Minseo Cho said, "We were able to differentiate ourselves from other students from Korean universities by providing creative and yet very profound ideas by utilizing the knowledge we learned in the Fashion Business Management classes. Despite all of us being first-year students, it was a great honor and a very meaningful experience to win such a competition." These remarkable accomplishments serve as a milestone for both SBU and FIT as they pave their future careers. By excelling on the global stage, they continue to uphold academic excellence and innovation that defines these renowned institutions.
